with a 'Twist' June 20, 2006
<-- the 'twist' at the end of her tail...

She is a puppy.
After 10 days of antibiotics and $550+, her stuffy nose is clearing up.
Twist/Slayer/Claire is full of spunk and wants to do whatever Flip does, but in her own way.
She'll yank your arm off in the park trying to Flip stuff. We tried fetch yesterday, but she is more interested in shaking the ball to death than bringing it all the way.
D will help fix that little discrepancy.
She has discovered the bed, much to the consternation of the cats. She prefers sleeping at the foot of the bed on top of the covers.
She HATES closed doors.
She HATES anyone leaving.
She HATES being separated from Flip even if its just by sight.
She whimpers when she can't see us.
She is still discovering the house. She likes looking out the back door, loves the yard and will sit in the front window with Pthalo. She is trying to figure out Ting, who is as always coy.
Fellini ignores her (he is all to comfortable with the fact that he will kick her
bottom if she gets on his nerves).
She has learned:
not to eat cat poop
not to eat cat food
not to be food aggressive
Flip is the boss
Father's Day: They played. Flip actually played with her. I let them out in the
yard to get some sun and the next thing I saw was the two of them playing. Flip spent most of the time sitting on her, making sure that she understood he was boss-dog. She thought it was hilarious fun and was
wound like a spring when she came in from the romp (Flip promptly passed out on the floor -poor guy couldn't even make it to the couch).
Flip still grumps at her, but is starting to accept the fact that she's around. If
she comes near him when he is getting attention, he gets upset and growls. He doesn't think much of her laying on the bed. He is starting to school her on things though and is picking up that its his job to help keep her in line. When that job really sinks in, I pitty the girl.
All in all we are learning how to trip over each other. There is more slobber to clean up. As D says, there's one too many animals for the hands we've got between us, but someone is always napping during love sessions anyway.

Puppy Slayer? June 17, 2006

More pics of Slayer

Day 6.
She is a puppy. She still sleeps a lot and hates being alone.
She has found her voice: she whines when we leave her and last night, she decided to bark like a mad dog at something going on outside (turns out it was a 4.7 earthquake). The good news is that she responds really well when she is told what is not allowed.
She finally took a submissive roll on her back (after much work). She sits on at the corner before crossing the street.
She understands: sit, lay down, up (stand), come, heel (sort of), no crying, no bark. We are working on "give me your paw" and "show me your belly".
She showed me her puppiness when she finally got her paws on grass. She went from mild mannered puppish dog to full-blown wild child as soon as the paws hit the green blades. She smiled so big I thought it wrapped around her head and she jumped all around (tangling herself in the leash).
The minute she hit the pavement it was back to calm dog.
She eats whatever food I give her, but prefers to drink Ensure to water (we are trying to ween her).
She is still on quarantine and has crusties on her nose that won't go away. This is an indicative symptom of dystemper which is a virus. She has been on antibiotics for almost a week and still is symptomatic so we'll see what the doctor says tomorrow.

Went to visit her old family under the bush in the park. Made sure that the old folks understood that we were going to hold onto her. They understood. As it turns out, her name was not Claire, but Slayer. It actually makes more sense. Claire seemed a little uptown for a homeless pitbull, but who was I to judge? Everyone at the encampment was very grateful.

All in all she is a great kid. Smart. Very smart. We'll see if she can make through the last two hurdles: illness and then ...Flip.

Claire Dog Rescued June 10, 2006

...more pictures of Claire...
If she had not been scooped up when she was, we're sure she would not have survived the night. She was taken to All Pets Hospital and given a full dose of Antibiotics and subdermal saline injection...
